An autopsy has found that former Cabinet minister and ex-Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo died from severe blunt force trauma to the chest following a road crash in Naivasha earlier this month, officials said on Wednesday.
Government pathologist Johansen Oduor, who conducted the postmortem alongside a family pathologist, said Jirongo sustained multiple rib fractures, a perforated heart, ruptured major blood vessels and massive internal bleeding.
The injuries were consistent with a high-impact collision, the pathologists said.
The crash occurred in the early hours of Dec. 13 along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near Karai, Naivasha, when Jirongo’s vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a public service vehicle. Police said the impact caused extensive damage to the car.
Investigators said CCTV footage from a nearby petrol station captured Jirongo’s vehicle shortly before it rejoined the highway moments before the collision.
Authorities are reviewing the footage as part of ongoing investigations.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said it has launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including speed, road conditions and possible driver error.
The driver of the bus involved was questioned by police and later released on cash bail pending further investigations into causing death by dangerous driving.
Jirongo’s body was transferred to Nairobi after the crash and is being held at a funeral home as the family prepares burial arrangements.
