Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has issued a stern warning to individuals vandalizing electricity transformers and stealing power cables, saying those found culpable will face the full force of the law.
Speaking on Friday during the launch of the Last Mile Power Project in Sikalame and Musikoma villages, Kanduyi Constituency, Bungoma County, Wandayi urged residents to take responsibility in safeguarding public electricity infrastructure against acts of theft and destruction.
He further cautioned Kenyans against falling prey to scammers demanding money for electricity connections, clarifying that the government is covering all installation costs for new connections under the current electrification drive.
Wandayi, who was accompanied by Kanduyi MP John Makali and Sirisia MP John Waluke, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to equitable development across all regions.
He noted that KSh 1.8 million has been allocated under the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) program to expand access to electricity in Bungoma County.
“No part of the country will be left behind in the Kenya Kwanza development agenda,” Wandayi said.
