Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi’s decision to return to Western Kenya and vie for Bungoma governor is redrawing political lines in a region long plagued by factionalism and fleeting alliances.

Wanyonyi, a two-term MP and brother to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, now faces former governor Wycliffe Wangamati, businessman Zachariah Barasa, and Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa in what’s shaping into a high-stakes race.

Seen as a pragmatic and reform-minded politician, Wanyonyi’s shift from Nairobi politics could further fracture the opposition vote and unsettle older political networks.

In Trans Nzoia, Governor George Natembeya has tapped into public frustration to fuel his TAWE movement — a bold challenge to Western heavyweights like Wetang’ula and Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, who he accuses of betraying Luhya interests.

The slogan “TAWE,” Swahili for “enough,” has struck a chord with disillusioned youth demanding accountability over handshakes and backroom deals.

Wanyonyi’s candidacy, however, presents a dilemma for the Orange Democratic Movement. Once dominant in Western Kenya, ODM has seen its support slip to Ruto’s UDA and smaller breakaway factions.

Observers say Wanyonyi’s move will test whether ODM can still mobilize the region or whether its influence will continue to fade. If Wanyonyi defects or fails to energize the base, the party risks further erosion.

Meanwhile, Wangamati remains a strong contender with loyal supporters but faces lingering questions over his leadership.

Didmus Barasa, a fiery UDA MP, has branded himself as a bold alternative — but critics view him as opportunistic.

Zachariah Barasa, a businessman and philanthropist, is banking on growing fatigue with traditional politicians.

Western Kenya has long produced national political figures — from Masinde Muliro and Kijana Wamalwa to Moody Awori — but has struggled to wield lasting influence.

As the 2027 race heats up, Wanyonyi’s return may either reinvigorate the region’s political identity or deepen its divisions.
