Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, is undergoing a major facelift ahead of the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

A new tartan track and digital scoreboards are being installed as part of efforts to modernize the facility.

Sports officials say key equipment, including the video assistant referee (VAR) system, has already arrived.

The installation of the tartan track is expected to follow the tournament in August.

Earlier upgrades included a new canopy, artificial turf over track areas, and seating improvements.

The government has made Kasarani the centerpiece of its CHAN and AFCON 2027 preparation efforts.

Other venues are also being revamped. Nyayo Stadium has been upgraded with floodlights, media facilities, and VAR capability.

In Eastlands, the Dandora Stadium opened in 2024 with a 4,000-seat capacity.

Meanwhile, the 60,000-seat Talanta Sports Stadium is under construction and expected to open by the end of 2025.

The government’s 2025/26 budget allocated KSh 29.7 billion to the sports, culture, and tourism docket.

The Sports Fund received KSh 13.5 billion, down from KSh 16.5 billion the previous year. Sports Kenya was given KSh 402 million for facility upgrades.

Despite the funding cuts, other departments saw increased support.

The Registrar of Sports received KSh 2.3 billion for automation, and the Kenya Academy of Sports and Anti-Doping Agency received nearly KSh 500 million combined.

Kenya has ramped up investment in stadiums and training centers over the past three years. Ulinzi Sports Complex, with a modern athletics track and indoor facilities, was launched in 2022.

These upgrades are key to the country’s ambition to become a regional sports hub.

While budget constraints may slow down programming, the focus remains on completing core infrastructure in time for CHAN and AFCON.

Officials are betting that world-class facilities will leave a lasting legacy for local athletes and sports development.

Ends.
