Parliament has summoned a principal secretary over the mismanagement of funds allocated to the Inua Jamii program, a crucial safety net for the nation’s senior citizens.
Over Ksh100 million, intended to support vulnerable elderly individuals, was reportedly returned to the National Treasury instead of being disbursed to its intended beneficiaries.

If the official fails to appear, consequences include the possibility of arrest, being forcefully escorted to Parliament, or a fine of Ksh500,000.

“These funds are a lifeline for the elderly, and returning them to the Treasury is an insult to their plight.”

The loss of critical financial assistance exacerbates their hardships and undermines the objectives of the Inua Jamii program.
Margaret Njeri, 78, a program beneficiary, voiced her frustration.
“We wait for these payments for months, only to hear that the money is being sent back? We are being forgotten.”

While the summons is a step toward accountability, the incident highlights systemic issues within public resource management.
Experts argue for stronger monitoring mechanisms, streamlined disbursement processes, and stricter oversight to ensure programs like Inua Jamii fulfill their mandate.
