Nairobi,Kenya.
National Assembly Speaker Dr. Moses Wetang’ula has reaffirmed his commitment to nurturing local talent and supporting youth empowerment through sports.
Wetang’ula donated KSh 2 million to Nzoia Sugar FC to help address logistical challenges and sustain the team’s performance in the National Super League (NSL).
The donation, issued from the Speaker’s office, was presented to the club’s chairman, Evans Kadenge, during a courtesy visit by Kadenge alongside Kanduyi MP John Makali and Bungoma Senator David Wafula Wakoli.
Wetang’ula expressed his dedication to ensuring the club achieves its long-term goals, including promotion to the Kenya Premier League.
“Sports are critical for keeping our health in check as well as nurturing talent,” Wetang’ula said.
He emphasized the importance of investing in training and skill specialization to enhance the team’s performance.
The Speaker assured Kadenge, son of the late Kenyan football legend Joe Kadenge, of his continued support, noting that his donation was just the beginning of a collaborative effort to revive the team.
Wetang’ula also called on leaders across the country to encourage youth to diversify their skills, including sports, as a pathway to economic gains and improved health.
Persistent Financial Challenges.
Nzoia Sugar FC, one of Kenya’s historically significant football teams, has been struggling with financial instability, forcing it to rely on crowdfunding to meet operational costs.
Players often face salary delays, and the club lacks adequate training facilities, which hampers its competitiveness.
Despite these challenges, the team has shown resilience. In the 2022/2023 NSL season, Nzoia Sugar FC secured a 10th-place finish, an improvement from 14th the previous year.
However, the club’s financial woes remain a significant hurdle to its progress.
A New Era with Masinde Muliro Stadium.
The construction of Masinde Muliro Stadium in Kanduyi is expected to transform Nzoia Sugar FC’s fortunes and bolster sports in Bungoma County.
The modern facility, with a capacity of 30,000 spectators, will serve as the team’s permanent home ground.
This will address the current limitations of Sudi Stadium, whose dilapidated infrastructure has affected the team’s morale and fan engagement.
Beyond providing a venue for matches, the stadium is poised to generate substantial economic benefits.
Revenue from ticket sales, merchandise, and hosting national and international events will create a steady income stream for the club.
The stadium is also expected to create jobs for local youth in areas such as stadium operations, event management, and ancillary businesses.
Furthermore, it positions Bungoma County as a hub for sports tourism, fostering growth in local businesses and the hospitality sector.
Calls for Long-Term Sponsorship.
Senator Wakoli, present during the event, echoed Wetang’ula’s sentiments, urging corporate sponsors to step in and support Nzoia Sugar FC.
“Our players and fans have shown incredible resilience, but without structured and sustained support, Nzoia Sugar FC will continue to struggle,” Wakoli said.
He called on the private sector and local government to prioritize investment in sports as a tool for youth empowerment and community development.
As the new season approaches, stakeholders are optimistic that a blend of short-term financial relief and strategic planning will enable Nzoia Sugar FC to reclaim its former glory and strengthen its role as a pillar of Bungoma’s sporting heritage.
Ends.
