Forget about a holiday break for top athletes—this season is far from slowing down! As the track season comes to a close, the focus shifts to the high-stakes world of road races, where some of Kenya’s most elite runners are gearing up for an exciting challenge.
Among the top names confirmed for the prestigious Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata, scheduled for December 15, 2024, are Daniel Ebenyo and Benson Kipruto. This Gold Label 25K event is known for attracting the world’s best, and these two athletes are ready to prove why they’re among the top contenders.
Daniel Ebenyo, fresh from his participation in the senior men’s race at the Athletics Kenya cross-country leg in Bomet, is far from resting on his laurels. Despite a season marked by ups and downs—including a heartbreaking fall at the Prefontaine Classic 10,000m trials that dashed his Olympic debut hopes—Ebenyo is back with a vengeance. After narrowly missing a podium finish at the Prefontaine Classic, he bounced back with a strong fifth-place finish at his marathon debut in Chicago, showing the world that he’s still in top form.
Ebenyo’s return to the Kolkata 25K is a significant one. Last year, he made history by setting a new course record with a blistering time of 1:11:13, just shy of the world record. This time, he’s aiming to defend his title and improve on his own performance. “The Kolkata roads are fast, and conditions are ideal; it is a perfect opportunity for me to defend my title and better my timing,” Ebenyo said confidently.
With both Ebenyo and Kipruto in the race, the competition is sure to be fierce, and all eyes will be on Kolkata as these Kenyan marathon stars chase glory on the global stage once again.
