Trans Nzoia County has emerged as one of Kenya’s most fiercely contested political battlegrounds ahead of the 2027 General Election, with political parties, aspiring leaders, and national power brokers intensifying campaigns in a region viewed as critical to the race for State House.
The county, led by Governor George Natembeya, remains a thorn in the side of President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration. Political observers note that despite being part of the Rift Valley region, Trans Nzoia has increasingly leaned toward opposition politics, making it one of the most unpredictable counties in the country.

Governor Natembeya, a vocal critic of the national government, has continued to strengthen his political influence alongside DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, creating a formidable opposition front that has complicated Kenya Kwanza’s efforts to gain a firm foothold in the county.
The political environment has reportedly made presidential visits challenging, with analysts pointing to deep political polarization that has seen the county become a key battleground between government supporters and opposition-aligned leaders.
Efforts by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to rally support for President Ruto’s re-election campaign have yet to deliver a decisive breakthrough in the county.
At the same time, new political formations are reshaping the electoral landscape. The People’s Renaissance Movement (PRM), linked to the ODM-backed Linda Mwananchi movement and championed locally by Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, has begun making inroads into the county’s political space.

However, the movement has encountered resistance from the Linda Ground faction, which has settled on human rights scholar and University of Nairobi lecturer Kathleen Jemimah Chepkemboi Umutokoh as its preferred candidate for the Saboti parliamentary seat.
Meanwhile, the ruling UDA party is working aggressively to strengthen its grassroots networks, particularly in Saboti Constituency. Businessman Julius Sabila Cherry has emerged as a key figure in the constituency through community projects ranging from road rehabilitation and cattle dip restoration to medical outreach programs and economic empowerment initiatives targeting youth and women.

Political insiders say these developments prompted Kenya Kwanza strategists to establish the William Ruto Mashinani Forum, a grassroots engagement platform designed to gather public views and pave the way for future presidential visits and government project launches.
The county’s importance to national politics stems partly from the 2022 General Election when President Ruto finished behind opposition leader Raila Odinga in the presidential vote. Determined to reverse that outcome, government operatives are reportedly banking on infrastructure projects, employment opportunities, and development initiatives to win over voters.

Trans Nzoia’s political history suggests that the battle ahead will be anything but straightforward. The county has traditionally leaned toward opposition politics despite producing national leaders such as the late Vice President Michael Wamalwa Kijana, former Cabinet Ministers Kipruto Kirwa and Noah Wekesa.
Political analysts argue that voting patterns in the county are influenced by a combination of party loyalty, ethnic considerations, development records, coalition arrangements, and financial muscle during campaigns.
Speculation continues to surround Governor Natembeya’s political future amid reports that he could part ways with DAP-K and join Jubilee Party, associated with former President Uhuru Kenyatta. Although no official announcement has been made, such a move would significantly alter the county’s political equation.
The race for the governor’s seat is already taking shape, with Kiminini MP Kakai Bisau and former MP Chris Wamalwa both linked to gubernatorial ambitions under the UDA banner. Ford Kenya is reportedly considering Kenya’s Permanent Representative to UN-Habitat, Susan Nakhumicha, as its preferred candidate.
The Senate contest is also shaping up as a major showdown between incumbent Senator Allan Chesang and Deputy Speaker Obed Mahanga, while former Senator Mike Malinga Mbito remains a potential entrant.
With UDA, Ford Kenya, Jubilee, DCP, PRM and DAP-K all positioning themselves for the contest, Trans Nzoia is rapidly becoming one of the country’s most closely watched political arenas.
As political alliances shift and campaigns gather momentum, the county appears set for an intense electoral battle that could not only determine local leadership but also influence the broader political direction of Western Kenya and the national contest for power in 2027.
