NRM Issues Harsh Warning: “There Is No Independent in NRM”

The National Resistance Movement has delivered one of its clearest warnings yet to party members: anyone running as an independent after losing NRM primaries is no longer part of the party.

In a firm statement shared across the party’s website, Facebook and X pages, NRM National Treasurer Barbara Nekesa Oundo said the secretariat will not recognize or support any politician claiming to be an “NRM-leaning independent,”.

She announced that such claims are false, misleading and a direct threat to NRM party cohesion.

NRM clarified that members who choose the independent route must vacate all party positions immediately or face disciplinary action, including suspension from all future party activities.

The warning follows a growing trend of defeated primary aspirants declaring plans to contest in 2026 as independents.

NRM leaders, including Secretary-General Richard Todwong, insist that such candidates “voluntarily quit the Movement” the moment they defy primary results.

The party says independents dilute NRM votes, confuse the voter base and hand the opposition unnecessary strength.

For now, the message from the top is unmistakable: You either run on the NRM ticket — or you run alone.
