Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu
NAIROBI (IP)
Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu is expected to walk out of Kamiti Maximum Prison after securing a KSh 53 million bank guarantee, offering him temporary relief as he awaits the outcome of his appeal.
Waititu has been behind bars since February, when an anti-corruption court found him guilty in a KSh 588 million graft case. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison or an alternative fine of about KSh 52.5 million.
The High Court earlier allowed him to seek release on bond, but directed that he provide a full bank guarantee covering the entire amount.
Judges later upheld those terms, rejecting his attempt to reduce the guarantee or substitute it with a smaller cash deposit.
Officials say Waititu will be released once the guarantee is formally verified and deposited with the court.
Until then, he remains at Kamiti, where he has served several months of his sentence.
His appeal, filed this year, challenges both the conviction and the 12-year term.
The court has indicated it will continue hearing the case without delay.
If the guarantee is cleared, Waititu will regain his freedom pending the final determination of the appeal — a process that could extend into next year.
