DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (IP)
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s whereabouts remain unknown as mass protests sweep the nation amid a total communication blackout and a deepening political crisis.
Thousands of demonstrators are marching toward the State House in Dar es Salaam, defying curfews and a heavy security presence.
The unrest, now in its third day, has spread to major cities including Dodoma, Arusha and Mwanza following a disputed election that opposition groups say was rigged in favor of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.
Opposition leaders claim that as many as 700 people have been killed in clashes with security forces, while hospitals in several regions are reportedly overwhelmed with the injured.
Witnesses describe streets littered with debris and burning barricades as soldiers and police patrol key intersections.
The government has imposed sweeping curfews, deployed the military and cut off internet and mobile networks nationwide — moves critics say are aimed at silencing the public outcry.
With no official statement from the presidency and growing speculation about President Suluhu’s location, tensions remain high.
Civil society groups are calling for urgent international intervention and a transparent investigation into the election and the escalating violence.
