The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has unveiled new tools to make it easier for small businesses and ordinary Kenyans to pay taxes.
The new services include a USSD code, a WhatsApp chatbot, and a plan to recruit thousands of local tax agents.
Officials say the goal is to cut costs and reduce the digital hurdles many taxpayers face when filing returns or making payments.
By dialing *222# and selecting Option 5, Kenyans can now retrieve or verify PIN numbers and access other key services without internet.
For those with smartphones, a WhatsApp chatbot will provide instant assistance.
“We know not everyone has internet or the skills to use our online platforms. These solutions bring services closer to the people,” said George Obell, acting commissioner for micro and small taxpayers.
KRA also announced plans to recruit 10,000 agents across the country to handle basic services like registration, filing and payments.
The move is expected to create income opportunities for agents while easing access for taxpayers especially outside major towns.

The USSD service still requires a basic phone leaving out the very poor or illiterate.

KRA board director Lydia Rono urged Kenyans to see paying taxes as a duty.
“Compliance is critical for national growth,” she said.
