In a landmark appointment, Umukuka III, Jude Mike Mudoma has named Mzee Dominic Wetang’ula as Chief Advisor of the Bamasaaba cultural institution.
Wetang’ula, father of the current Kenyan Speaker of Kenya’s National Assembly, will now serve as a guardian of traditions and values, charged with advising Umukuka whenever the institution drifts from its cultural path.
According to the Bamasaaba leadership, the role is broad and discretionary, emphasizing its importance in safeguarding heritage, beliefs and customs.
Wetang’ula has long been a respected cultural elder. He is remembered as the only person given permission by both the late Umukuka I and the Ugandan government to view the sealed body of Umukuka I after his passing.
The appointment underscores Bamasaaba’s commitment to continuity, bringing in a trusted elder with historical legitimacy and public standing to strengthen the institution while navigating modern pressures.
