MARALAL, Kenya (IP)
One person was killed and another wounded Sunday evening when armed bandits attacked bush-clearing workers in Lorokoti, Samburu Central, a local administrator said.
County Deputy Commissioner Titus Omanyi said the victims were ambushed as they worked in the bush.
He described the incident as a case of banditry and confirmed that security officers including police and reservists, had launched a manhunt for the attackers.
“The suspects escaped after the incident, but security teams are in pursuit,” Omanyi said, urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities.
The attack has sparked fresh fear among residents of Lorokoti who say they have lived under constant threat from armed groups roaming the border areas.
Locals described the slain worker as the sole breadwinner of his family deepening the sense of loss in the community.
Regional leaders condemned the violence and called for the deployment of more officers to Samburu’s hotspots.
They said the continued loss of life and disruption of livelihoods is undermining development in the county.
The government has promised to intensify security patrols and restore order but residents say they want lasting solutions that include disarming bandits, opening up roads and providing alternative economic opportunities to young men drawn into violence.
Authorities said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
