The Chief Principal of Maseno School, Peter Otieno, is winning admiration for his dedication to nurturing both academic and co-curricular excellence at one of Kenya’s most prestigious institutions.

This year, Otieno personally funded the school’s handball team to attend the national secondary schools’ handball games.

The team had narrowly missed out on qualification after losing in the regional finals but the principal insisted they deserved the exposure and experience of witnessing the highest level of competition.

“Sports are as important as academics in shaping a holistic student,” Otieno said, underscoring his belief in balancing the two pillars of education.

His leadership has also been marked by a culture of recognition and motivation. The principal regularly rewards top-performing students, teachers and non-teaching staff for their commitment and excellence.

That approach has created a sense of pride and ownership across the Maseno School community.

Colleagues describe Otieno as soft-spoken yet visionary, with a clear mission: to transform Maseno into a national hub for academic and sporting excellence.

His dream is for the school to be a model for others, benchmarking best practices in both the classroom and the field.

Founded in 1906 by the Church Missionary Society, Maseno School has grown from a modest boys’ institution into one of Kenya’s top national schools.

Its alumni network includes some of the country’s most distinguished leaders: Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice President; Archbishop Festo Olang’, the first African head of the Anglican Church of Kenya; and Prof. David Wasawo, a pioneering zoologist and academic among others.

Beyond the classroom, Maseno has a proud tradition in sports, drama and music. Its rugby and football teams are regular contenders at national competitions while its drama and music performances have won accolades across the country.

The school’s emphasis on both discipline and creativity has long set it apart as a model of holistic education.

Today, with a student population of more than 2,000, Maseno school continues to balance its historic traditions with modern educational demands.

Its sprawling campus, shaded by jacaranda trees and framed by the hills of western Kenya, provides an environment where students are molded into leaders of character and competence.

With Otieno at the helm, Maseno is not only preserving its century-old legacy but also reimagining its role in Kenya’s education system.

“We are custodians of a legacy,” he often reminds colleagues. “What was started over a century ago must continue to inspire future generations.”

Maseno’s story is one of resilience, excellence and vision — a reminder that education, when pursued with passion and balance, can shape both individuals and nations.
