Residents Sound Alarm as Muggers Terrorize Nairobi Streets

NAIROBI, Kenya (Sept. 7, 2025)

Nairobi residents are raising alarm over a surge in muggings targeting commuters in the early morning and late evening, especially on weekends.

Victims report being ambushed by knife-wielding gangs in the CBD, Eastleigh, Pipeline and other estates, losing phones, handbags and cash.

Matatu crews have begun warning passengers against using mobile phones in public, citing frequent attacks just outside vehicles.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Onesmus has promised action but residents say police patrols remain inconsistent and poorly lit streets unsafe.

“It’s like we’ve been left to fend for ourselves,” said one resident.

Business owners warn the insecurity could dent investor confidence in the city, long seen as East Africa’s economic hub.

Residents are calling for more police presence, improved lighting and community policing to restore safety.
