NAIROBI, Kenya (Aug. 23, 2025) — Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale is under growing fire for remarks critics say risk inflaming Kenya’s fragile ethnic balance ahead of the 2027 elections.
Lawmakers, civil society groups and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) have branded Duale’s comments “divisive and outrageous,” demanding an apology, resignation or even impeachment.
Analysts warn the rhetoric echoes the ethnic mobilization that fueled Kenya’s 2007 post-election violence which left more than 1,000 people dead.
“From a Defence CS, such words are not just careless banter — they are a national security threat,” one MP said.
Critics argue the remarks reflect a deeper political culture that weaponizes ethnicity, with state jobs and tenders often traded along tribal lines.
President William Ruto who campaigned on a platform of unity has yet to publicly rebuke Duale, deepening concerns over his administration’s commitment to cohesion.
The NCIC has cautioned against escalating tribal rhetoric but enforcement remains weak.
Observers warn that framing governance failures and corruption allegations as ethnic persecution risks dragging Kenya back into instability.
“The cost of silence is too high,” a civil society leader said. “If unchecked, tribal politics will once again be paid for in blood.”
Ends.
