Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has pledged KSh 400 million to the Harambee Stars if they win the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) — a move that brings the total potential prize money for the national team to KSh 1 billion, following an earlier presidential promise of KSh 600 million.
Sonko announced the pledge shortly after a high-level visit to the team’s training base, where national support for the players has surged ahead of the tournament.
Emphasizing that his contribution is not politically motivated, Sonko said, “The President has done a good gesture; it will motivate the players.
I am not in competition with the President, but mine will be just to support his gesture.”
The bonus breakdown would see the players receive:
KSh 600 million from the President
KSh 400 million from Sonko
→ Total: KSh 1 billion
Sonko added that he has shifted focus from individual player rewards to team-based incentives.
“Other times I used to reward players for every goal scored. But that at some point can bring individualism in the team,” he said.
The pledge is expected to boost morale and strengthen Kenya’s chances of making history at home by winning their first CHAN title.
