Delta Flight Returns to LAX After Engine Catches Fire Midair.

By IP Reporter.

LOS ANGELES (IP) — A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Atlanta made an emergency return to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Friday after the aircraft’s crew reported signs of a fire in the left engine shortly after takeoff.

The incident involved a Boeing 767-400 aircraft that is more than 24 years old, according to flight data and airline sources.

Dramatic video footage shared by passengers and eyewitnesses showed visible flames trailing from the plane’s left engine while it was still airborne.

Flight DL2374 had just departed LAX when the pilots requested an immediate return due to engine trouble.

Emergency crews were placed on standby as the aircraft landed safely with no reported injuries among the passengers or crew.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident.

Delta Air Lines also confirmed that it is cooperating with federal authorities and conducting its own internal review.

This marks the airline’s second reported engine fire in 2025, raising fresh concerns over aging aircraft in commercial fleets and the Boeing 767 model’s performance history.

Delta has not disclosed whether the aircraft involved was due for any major maintenance or inspection at the time of the flight.

The FAA has not issued any grounding or advisory regarding similar aircraft, but safety analysts say regulators may increase scrutiny if patterns emerge.

Further updates are expected as investigators analyze flight data and engine components to determine the cause of the fire.

Ends.
