MADRID.
Diogo Jota, the 28-year-old Liverpool and Portugal national team forward, died early Thursday morning in a car crash alongside his younger brother, André Silva, in Zamora, Spain.
Spanish authorities said the two were traveling alone in a Lamborghini when the vehicle veered off the road, overturned, and burst into flames.
Preliminary investigations suggest a blown tire during an overtaking maneuver may have caused the crash. No other vehicles were involved.
Jota, born Dec. 4, 1996, in Porto, Portugal, rose through the ranks at Paços de Ferreira before making his mark at FC Porto, Atlético Madrid, and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
He joined Liverpool in 2020, where he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances and helped lead the club to the 2024–25 Premier League title.
He earned 49 caps for Portugal and scored 14 international goals. He was part of the squads that won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
His brother, André Silva, 25, was a professional footballer for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel.
Jota had recently married Rute Cardoso and was the father of three children.
Outside of football, he was also active in esports, having founded his own team, Luna Galaxy.
His estimated net worth was approximately £20 million.
Liverpool FC released a statement saying it was devastated by the news, and tributes have poured in from across the football world.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the crash.
