NAIROBI, Kenya .

President William Ruto on Saturday directed a robust crackdown on violent demonstrations and those responsible for orchestrating them, following attacks on police and public infrastructure.

Speaking at State House, Nairobi, during a meeting with regional and county security commanders and National Government Administration Officers, Ruto condemned the “Wednesday mayhem” and stressed the need to safeguard law enforcement:

“We cannot have a country where criminals run after our police officers. If a policeman’s life is in danger, then how can our families be safe?”
He vowed to hold accountable the perpetrators behind the unrest:

“This trend must change. The criminals that attacked our officers and destroyed property in the Wednesday mayhem will be held to account.

We will stand by every man and woman in uniform, and protect them, as they discharge their duties. That is how we will have a more secure and stable Kenya where meaningful development occurs.”

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen strongly endorsed the tough stance, telling officers they are entitled to defend themselves—and their comrades—against violent mobs:

“The gun is not for decoration. It is to save your life and protect the people of Kenya.”
He commended police for showing restraint but warned that any attacks on national installations would be met with decisive force.

Ends.
