Senator David Wakoli Wafula of Bungoma County showcased not only his leadership off the court but also his prowess on it during the 14th East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games held in Mombasa.
Representing Kenya in basketball, Senator Wakoli emerged as the top scorer of the tournament, earning accolades for his outstanding performance and resilience.
The EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games brought together legislators from eight East African nations — Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia — fostering both competition and camaraderie.
Kenya’s basketball team, spearheaded by Wakoli, made an impressive run in the tournament.
In a decisive 67-38 victory against Tanzania, Wakoli led the charge with an outstanding 16 points, demonstrating skill, agility, and a relentless drive that set the tone for his team’s success.
His scoring ability and leadership were pivotal, drawing praise from both teammates and spectators.
However, the intensity of the competition reached new heights in a nail-biting encounter with Uganda.
Despite Kenya’s narrow 52-53 defeat, Senator Wakoli once again took center stage, finishing as the top scorer and proving that his consistency under pressure is as formidable as his passion for the game.
Reflecting on the tournament, Senator Wakoli expressed immense pride in representing his country and the unity displayed among the East African nations.
“Being part of this tournament and emerging as the top scorer is a proud moment, but it’s the teamwork and resilience of our delegation that truly made the experience memorable.
These medals symbolize the effort, spirit, and dedication of every member of our team,” Wakoli said during the closing ceremony.
The games, which featured disciplines such as football, netball, athletics, and volleyball, were more than just a display of athleticism — they were a platform for strengthening regional ties.
The courtside cheers, the spirit of sportsmanship, and the shared determination to excel were reminders of the values that bind the East African Community.
Senator Wakoli commended all participants, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and unity in building a stronger region.
“These games have solidified the bonds of unity within the East African Community.
Through sports, we celebrate our diversity, our resilience, and our common goal of regional integration,” he remarked.
His call to action was clear: “Let us continue fostering collaboration and excellence, not just on the court, but in all aspects of regional development.”
Senator Wakoli’s performance and his inspiring leadership left a lasting impression, reminding everyone that teamwork and dedication — whether in governance or on the basketball court — are the cornerstones of a stronger, united East Africa.
