Kenya Awaiting Mpox Vaccines Amid First Reported Death

Date: Saturday, October 19, 2024
By: Swaleh

Kenya is currently facing a public health challenge as it awaits its first batch of Mpox vaccines, following the unfortunate report of its first Mpox-related death last week.

Current Situation
Cases Reported: There is one confirmed death and 14 Mpox cases spread across multiple counties, including Nakuru, Kajiado, Bungoma, Taita Taveta, Busia, Nairobi, Mombasa, Makueni, Kericho, Kilifi, and Uasin Gishu.
Recovery Status: Of the confirmed cases, eight individuals have fully recovered, while five are still undergoing treatment.
Border Concerns
With ongoing high transit activities to and from various high-risk countries, there are significant concerns about potential loopholes that could lead to an increase in cases. Despite assurances from the Ministry of Health about tightening border measures, there is currently no active testing or screening at the Nairobi-Namanga border entry.

Contact Tracing Efforts
Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa reported that contact tracing remains a priority. Out of 68 listed contacts, 61 have completed the 21-day follow-up, with three testing positive for Mpox. In the last 24 hours, 30,237 travelers have been screened across points of entry, contributing to a cumulative total of 1,362,657 screenings since the outbreak began.

Vaccine Access Challenges
Vaccination rates across the African region remain alarmingly low. The Democratic Republic of Congo has received its first consignment of 265,000 Mpox vaccines, while Kenya has yet to receive any. This lack of access has led many African nations to rely on vaccine donations from wealthier countries, echoing the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Importance of Community Engagement
The World Health Organization notes that the Mpox incubation period can range from five to 21 days, which poses challenges for detection at border points. There is a pressing need for community engagement and education to prevent ignorance and stigma surrounding the disease.

Ministry of Health’s Commitment
Dr. Barasa emphasized the Ministry’s dedication to safeguarding public health. Health teams are implementing preventive measures, conducting screenings, and ensuring prompt treatment for confirmed cases. Additionally, the Ministry is actively working to disseminate information to combat stigma and misinformation about Mpox.

Call to Action
Dr. Barasa urged all Kenyans to maintain good hygiene practices, avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms such as fever, skin rashes, or swollen lymph nodes, and seek medical attention immediately if they develop any symptoms.

As the situation develops, it is crucial for the public to stay informed and engaged to mitigate the spread of Mpox in the country.
