Strengthening Primary Health Care to Manage Chronic Conditions

By Timothy Wekesa

Actors in primary health care are increasingly advocating for the robust management of diseases at the foundational level as a critical strategy to mitigate the escalating costs associated with chronic conditions. This approach was highlighted during a recent medical outreach mission in Bungoma, where the conversation focused on the pivotal role that primary health care can play in controlling and reducing the impact of chronic illnesses.

Stephen Wamalwa, Coordinator of Community Health Promoters in Bungoma Town, underscored the importance of early detection and management at the community level. He emphasized that many chronic conditions develop gradually, often going unnoticed until they become severe. “Most of these illnesses develop over time before they manifest. This is why utilizing our community health promoters can help manage them at primary levels,” Wamalwa explained.

Wamalwa’s comments were supported by Eric Owino, Communications Officer at Agha Khan Hospital, who highlighted the hospital’s proactive steps in addressing the issue. Owino noted that Agha Khan Hospital recently established a medical camp as part of their commitment to giving back to the community. This initiative is aimed at providing essential health services to residents who might struggle with the financial burden of medical expenses.

The medical camp, which included comprehensive screenings for various conditions such as cervical cancer, represents a critical intervention in the fight against chronic diseases. “Cases such as cervical cancer can be detrimental if they are not dealt with timely. We therefore encourage residents to embrace local check-ups and utilize our free medical camps,” Owino stated.

The beneficiaries of the medical camp expressed their appreciation for the initiative. They highlighted the significant relief provided by the free services, especially in the face of rising healthcare costs. David Fwaro, a beneficiary, described the initiative as a crucial support for the vulnerable population. “Such initiatives are good for the vulnerable, as getting money to pay bills is now proving difficult for many Kenyans due to high costs,” Fwaro remarked.

This outreach underscores a growing recognition of the need for a strong primary health care system. By focusing on early detection and proactive management, community health promoters and medical facilities like Agha Khan Hospital are not only improving health outcomes but also addressing the economic challenges faced by many Kenyans. As the conversation around chronic disease management evolves, the emphasis on strengthening primary health care remains a vital strategy in ensuring a healthier and more resilient community.
