In a significant move aimed at strengthening economic ties between Kenya and Europe, the European Union (EU) has announced a substantial investment of Ksh3.6 billion (€25 million) to support business development in Kenya. This funding is part of the broader Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) designed to enhance trade and open new market opportunities for Kenyan products across the EU’s 27 member states.

The announcement was made during a briefing held in Nairobi on August 20, where EU Ambassador to Kenya, Henriette Geiger, highlighted the importance of establishing a solid governance framework for the effective implementation of the EPA.

“The key objective is to set up the governance structure of this economic partnership agreement, and that is very important,” Geiger emphasized. “An agreement like that needs to be steered, and if there are issues at the adequate level, they need to be ironed out both at the technical and the political level.”

The EPA represents a landmark agreement that not only facilitates market access but also promotes mutual investment between Kenya and the EU. The Ksh3.6 billion funding will be directed towards an investment promotion program managed by the State Department for Investment.

Trade Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, who was present at the briefing, expressed appreciation for the EU’s crucial role in Kenya’s business development. “The EU has financed €25 million, and this program will run within the State Department for Investment. The EU is a great partner, and through the EPA, Kenya and the EU have agreed to access each other’s markets,” Mvurya stated.

In addition to the financial support, the Kenyan government will launch a nationwide sensitization campaign to inform the business community about the opportunities the EPA presents.

On his official social media platforms, Mvurya described the EPA as a transformative agreement that promises to enhance Kenya’s trade prospects. “We are embarking on a nationwide sensitization module aimed at appraising the Kenyan business community on the vast opportunities presented by the European Union Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA),” Mvurya posted.

“This strategic initiative will provide comprehensive insights into the benefits and potential of the agreement, which promises to open new markets for Kenyan products across all 27 European Union member states,” he added.

The EU’s investment and the accompanying awareness campaign signify a crucial step in bolstering Kenya’s trade and business landscape, promising new growth avenues and strengthened economic ties between Kenya and Europe.
