Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a suspected car thief who allegedly stole Ksh1.4 million from a vehicle parked outside a supermarket in Mombasa. The arrest was made on Tuesday at the Mombasa Law Courts.
The suspect, a middle-aged man, was apprehended in Changamwe after reportedly breaking into a Nissan X-Trail on June 26. The vehicle was parked outside the supermarket when the theft occurred. The suspect allegedly accessed the car through the driver’s door and made off with the cash.
Following the theft, DCI launched a manhunt and, in a well-coordinated operation, officers from Lang’ata tracked the suspect to his hideout in Nairobi. He was subsequently handed over to their Changamwe counterparts and arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts in Mombasa.
In light of the recent uptick in carjackings, the DCI has urged the public to remain vigilant. They recommend installing anti-theft devices and always parking in safe, well-lit, and visible areas.
“Before parking your car, ensure you remove or hide valuables that could attract thieves,” advised the DCI. “Always close your car windows and doors, lock the vehicle, and take your keys with you.”
The DCI reassured the public of its commitment to tackling car break-ins and theft. “The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains resolute in its efforts to combat vehicle theft and will deal with perpetrators to the fullest extent of the law,” the statement read.
