By Micah Sali.

Masinde Muliro stadium in Kanduyi will host CHAN championships in September this year , Bungoma County Executive Committee Member (Cecm), Eng Agnes Wachie has said.

In an interview with the Intellectual post Ms Wachie said that ‘the stadium has a sitting capacity of 12,000 people on the terraces’ which will be fixed with furniture.

Eng Wachie said that the government has contracted qualified technicians from the National Youth Service(NYS)to do the painting, tiling, plumbing and supervision of the project just to ensure that everything is fixed properly before the CHAN competitions.

‘we have corrected the changing rooms and redesigned the stadium to FIFA standards’, and even on top of the stadium ‘we shall put a canopy to allow games to go on even during a rainy season’.she added.

The construction of the stadium was started by the county government of Bungoma in 2019 at a cost of KSh. 679 million but due to exchequer delays, the rising cost of constructions materials and variations made on the structure, the cost has allegedly shot up to KSh. 807 million.

On accommodation, Wachie said that “Bungoma County is leading the western region in terms of a vibrant hospitality industry.

” with more than 3,000 hotels (two star status and above)we are able to accommodate all the dignitaries who will come for the celebrations,”

Ms Wachie said that the Sports Kenya entity has promised to construct a volleyball pitch, handball and netball court on the outskirts of the stadium.

“We shall construct another football pitch outside the stadium which will be used for training sessions as we want to protect the grass/carpet that will be erected on the main pitch,” said Wachie.
