Comedian and activist Eric Omondi has been charged with causing a disturbance on Parliament Road, Nairobi, after allegedly blocking traffic by pouring sukuma wiki (kale) onto the road.
The incident, which occurred on June 4, 2024, in Starehe Sub-county, disrupted traffic and raised concerns about public safety.
Omondi appeared before Milimani Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi, where he denied the charges.
According to the charge sheet, his actions obstructed vehicles and created a situation likely to cause a breach of peace.
The court heard that Omondi was arrested last Friday. Magistrate Ekhubi, noting the misdemeanor nature of the offense, granted Omondi a cash bail of Sh5,000 and ordered his release, emphasizing that detention over the weekend was unwarranted.
The case is set for mention on December 4, 2024.
This is not the first time the comedian has faced legal trouble linked to his activism.
In March 2023, Omondi was arrested for leading a protest over the high cost of living outside Parliament buildings.
The demonstration, aimed at pressuring the government to address inflation and the price of basic goods, ended with Omondi and several others spending a night in police custody.
In February 2022, Omondi was arrested during a dramatic stunt at Parliament, where he demanded that lawmakers pass a bill to support local content in the Kenyan entertainment industry.
He was charged with causing a public disturbance but was later released on bail.
Omondi’s persistent activism and large social media following have made him a unique figure in Kenya’s sociopolitical landscape.
With millions of followers across platforms, Omondi’s actions quickly go viral, drawing significant public attention to his causes.
However, this influence has also attracted scrutiny from the authorities.
His bold protests often challenge government policies and amplify public debates.
Authorities may view his actions as disruptive, especially when his stunts, like the sukuma wiki protest, garner widespread attention and potentially inspire others to take similar actions.
Arresting him may serve as a deterrent or a way for the government to manage public discourse, though it often backfires by giving him more visibility and support.
Omondi’s unconventional methods of advocacy continue to polarize opinion.
While some laud his commitment to highlighting social issues, others criticize the disruptive nature of his protests.
The outcome of this latest case will likely fuel further debate on the limits of lawful protest and the role of social media in activism.
Ends.
