Fire Hits Ortum Boys High School Amid Ongoing Crisis

Fire Breaks Out at Ortum Boys High School: Fourth Incident Since Endarasha Tragedy

By Swaleh

A fire broke out at Ortum Boys High School in Kapenguria, West Pokot, on Monday morning, marking yet another incident in a troubling series of school fires this week.

A Distressing Scene

The fire, which started around 9:00 AM, quickly engulfed one of the main dormitories and spread to others, creating a scene of chaos and panic among students and staff. Videos circulating online show students, dressed in black trousers and grey sweaters, fleeing from the thick smoke pouring out of their dormitories. Amid the commotion, some students were seen desperately trying to salvage their mattresses and personal belongings.

Investigation Underway

As of now, there is no official report from the school or the police regarding the cause of the fire or any casualties. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Preliminary reports suggest that an electrical fault may have triggered the blaze, but a comprehensive investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause.

A Disturbing Trend

This fire at Ortum Boys High School follows a series of similar incidents across the country in recent days. On Thursday, a devastating fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy resulted in the tragic loss of 21 lives. The following day, a fire at Isiolo Girls High School led to student injuries, and another blaze destroyed a dormitory at Njia Boys High School.

In light of these incidents, education officials are urging for rigorous inspections and improved safety protocols in schools. Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi has called for the elimination of primary boarding schools to prevent future tragedies, suggesting that primary education should remain day-based and that children should only board from high school onwards.

Community and Government Response

Parents and guardians are increasingly concerned about the safety of their children and are calling for schools to enhance their emergency response strategies and infrastructure. In response, the Ministry of Education has announced plans to review and update safety standards across all schools.

As the community comes to terms with this latest fire, efforts are being made to provide temporary accommodation and counseling services for the students displaced by the blaze. The swift response of local authorities and the school community will be crucial in managing the aftermath and preventing future incidents.

Conclusion

The recent spate of fires in schools underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and preparedness to protect students and staff. As investigations continue, it is vital that the lessons learned from these tragic events lead to concrete actions to prevent such disasters in the future.
