The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has initiated legal proceedings against the Nairobi City County government, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa, Inspector-General of Police, and Attorney-General Dorcas Oduor. The LSK is seeking to prevent the disposal of 120 unclaimed bodies currently held at the City Mortuary.
Details: The LSK’s lawsuit aims to ensure that the Nairobi County government follows proper procedures before disposing of these bodies. The society is requesting that the court mandate a public notice period of 120 days for individuals to identify and claim the bodies. Additionally, the LSK is calling for mandatory DNA sampling on the bodies before any disposal.
The LSK argues that these measures are essential to ensure the respectful treatment of the deceased and to prevent wrongful or premature disposal.
What You Need to Know: The lawsuit targets key figures including the Nairobi City County government, Directorate of Criminal Investigations head Mohamed Amin, Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa, Inspector-General of Police, and Attorney-General Dorcas Oduor. The LSK advocates for transparency and proper procedures to protect the dignity of the deceased.
