Yesterday, the County Assembly of Bungoma proudly hosted His Highness Owelukoosi Umukuuka (The Third) III, Jude Mike Mudoma, the esteemed cultural leader of the Bamasaaba community.

The Speaker of the County Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Situma, and the Clerk, Mr. Charles Wafula, warmly welcomed King Mudoma and his delegation, which included his cabinet and other key leaders.

Bungoma County Deputy Governor, Pastor Jennifer Mbatiany, who represented Governor Ken Lusaka was also present at this significant meeting.

The Bamasaaba community comprises the Bagishu, who reside in Uganda, and the Bukusu, who mainly reside in Bungoma County.

During the visit, King Mudoma urged the County Assembly leadership to champion cultural preservation, noting that the Bamasaba population now exceeds six million.

“We need to share and promote our tribe, heritage, tradition, and language. We also must preserve our traditional practices, indigenous medicine, and indigenous knowledge,” he emphasized.

The King also called for youth empowerment programs, highlighting the importance of preparing the youth to assume key leadership roles in the community.

Additionally, he urged current leaders to address social issues affecting the Bamasaba community, including health, water, child support, and mental health.

“Our people pay taxes. We need to design a development agenda that prioritizes our people, who are the main taxpayers, in programs that bring economic empowerment,” King Mudoma stated.

Speaker Emmanuel Situma welcomed the King and assured him of the County Assembly’s collaboration on the issues highlighted.

He highlighted the strong cultural bond between the Bagishu and Bukusu communities.

“The Bagishu and the Babukusu are not just neighbors; we are kin, linked by blood, language, and a common destiny. Our forefathers, who roamed these lands, forged a relationship grounded in mutual respect, cooperation, and a deep understanding of our cultural values,” he said.

He emphasized the significant role cultural leadership plays in preserving community identity and fostering unity.

The Delegation later attended the afternoon plenary sitting at the County Assembly where they were recognized by the Speaker and acknowledged by Hon. Members.

Ends.
