NAKURU, Kenya

Muliro Telewa, a distinguished Kenyan multimedia journalist whose career spanned decades of reporting for international and local media houses, including an extensive tenure with the BBC, has died. He was 68 years old.

Telewa passed away Monday morning while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Nakuru, his family confirmed.

According to family members, Telewa had been living with kidney failure for an extended period, though the condition had remained stable and manageable.

His sister told local media that he developed a sudden, severe cough on Sunday evening, prompting an emergency rush to the medical facility where he succumbed the following morning.

A Legacy of Courage and Pro-Democracy Reporting

Telewa was widely recognized as an influential figure in Kenyan journalism, notably for his fearless coverage of the country’s “Second Liberation“—the turbulent pro-democracy and Saba Saba movements during the autocratic regime of President Daniel arap Moi.

Colleagues and media historians remember him as a courageous reporter who endured police brutality and state harassment in the line of duty to bring critical socio-political updates to light.

From Global Airwaves to Local Mentorship

Beyond his foundational work within Kenya, Telewa transitioned into international broadcasting, working for many years as a producer and presenter for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

His distinct presentation style and editorial depth earned him a broad and loyal audience across East Africa and globally.

Following news of his passing on Monday, tributes from the Kenyan media fraternity flooded social networks.

Fellow journalists praised Telewa as a dedicated mentor, an unwavering truth-teller, and a pillar of professional integrity whose contributions left an indelible mark on African multimedia journalism.

“Fare thee well my brother my mentor veteran multimedia journalist Muliro Telewa,”said Mike Wanyama Chebusiri ,a former collegue at BBC.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.

Ends.
