Ugandan Member of Parliament John Musila has called for a national boycott of South African businesses operating in Uganda.
The protest, which specifically targets companies like MTN Uganda and Stanbic Bank Uganda, comes in response to deadly anti-migrant violence in South Africa that claimed the lives of three Ugandan nationals.
The Bubulo East Member of Parliament urged citizens to boycott South African-owned companies in retaliation for a wave of anti-immigrant violence in South Africa that resulted in the deaths of at least three Ugandans.
Musila, who confirmed his own nephew was among those killed in the unrest, publicly called on Ugandans to stop utilizing the services of major South African corporations, including MTN Uganda,Supersport,STV and Stanbic Bank Uganda.
“South Africans should not think they are the best in violence,” Musila stated during a media briefing.
Pointing out Uganda’s historical support for South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle, the legislator argued that economic pressure is a necessary tactic to demand fair and safe treatment for Africans living and working in South Africa.
The protests and boycott demands coincide with the repatriation of hundreds of Ugandan nationals who were displaced during the xenophobic unrest.
Following directives from President Yoweri Museveni, the government evacuated hundreds of affected citizens, with Acting Foreign Affairs Minister Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo confirming that the remains of the three victims are being returned to Uganda for burial.
The violence has sparked widespread outrage across Uganda, with Musila’s call for an economic boycott gaining traction as citizens demand justice and accountability for the victims.
