A section of Christians from the ACK Katakwa Diocese has threatened to break away and establish a new diocese following disagreements arising from the recent election of the Bishop-elect, Vitalis Job Ekuru.
The sentiments emerged in messages circulating among congregants, where some supporters of Rev. Cain Emojong called for a meeting at the diocesan cathedral to discuss concerns over the election outcome and to present a memorandum on behalf of dissatisfied faithful.
In one of the messages, the group urged members to attend the meeting and later engage national media houses, including Citizen TV and NTV, to articulate their position and advocate for what they termed as “the people’s bishop,” Rev. Cain Emojong.
The aggrieved Christians claimed they would explore the possibility of creating a separate diocese should their grievances remain unresolved. However, church leaders have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
The developments come just days after Ven. Dr. Vitalis Job Ekuru was elected as the fourth Bishop of ACK Katakwa Diocese, succeeding retired Bishop John Okude.
Church observers have urged the faithful to remain calm and allow the church’s established mechanisms to address any concerns, emphasizing the need to preserve unity within the diocese as it transitions to new leadership.
Further details are expected as church leaders and congregants continue consultations over the matter.
