Report: Former Iranian President Ahmadinejad killed in Israeli airstrike as conflict escalates

Former Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, known for fiery anti-Israel rhetoric and a confrontational presidency, was reportedly killed March 1, 2026, during Israeli airstrikes at the start of a major military operation inside Iran.

According to reports from Israeli newspaper Ma’ariv, Ahmadinejad was under house arrest when the strike hit his residence.

The building was destroyed in the attack, and the former president was believed to have been inside at the time.

Ahmadinejad served as Iran’s president from 2005 to 2013 and was widely known for his hardline positions, particularly toward Israel and the West.

His administration pursued an aggressive nuclear program that drew sweeping international sanctions and condemnation.

One of his most controversial statements — suggesting Israel “must be wiped off the map” — became a defining feature of his political legacy and a major source of diplomatic tension throughout his presidency.

The reported strike comes amid escalating hostilities linked to broader military operations involving Israel and the United States targeting Iranian military and infrastructure sites.

Analysts say the death of such a prominent former leader, even one who had been politically sidelined in recent years, carries significant symbolic weight.

Ahmadinejad’s presidency was also marked by internal unrest. His disputed 2009 reelection triggered the Green Movement, the largest wave of protests in Iran since the Iranian Revolution.

Security forces cracked down on demonstrators, leaving dozens dead and thousands detained.

As of early March 2026, Iranian state media had not officially confirmed Ahmadinejad’s death.

The lack of confirmation has fueled uncertainty as regional tensions continue to rise.

Observers say the development could further complicate an already volatile confrontation between Iran and Israel, raising concerns about potential retaliation and a broader regional conflict.
