“We should not simply let our water flow to Sudan and Egypt,” urged His Royal Highness Jude Mike Mudoma, the Umukuuka of Bamasaaba, as he called on residents of the Elgon sub-region to adopt irrigation farming to better utilize the area’s abundant water resources.

Speaking at the launch of a Davis and Shirtliff branch in Mbale City, Mudoma highlighted that Bamasaaba is home to over 200 streams, many of which remain untapped.

He emphasized the need for awareness campaigns and technical expertise to harness this water for commercial farming and to address climate change challenges.

Mudoma urged Davis and Shirtliff to partner with Bukuka Bwa Bamasaaba to organize regional training tours on modern irrigation technologies and sustainable water use.

Patrick Mufwoya, Managing Director of Davis and Shirtliff Uganda, said the new Mbale branch will offer solar-powered irrigation equipment to commercial farmers, helping address food security challenges.

Mbale Mayor Cassim Namugali welcomed the investment, noting the city’s stable and clean environment as key to attracting businesses.

Mudoma’s call to action underscores irrigation’s potential to transform agriculture in the Elgon region, promote food security, and help farmers adapt to changing climatic conditions.

Ends.
