BUNGOMA, Kenya (AP) — Bungoma County is set to see significant improvements in its informal settlements with a Sh378 million investment under the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Project (KISIP2).
The program is funded by the World Bank, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the European Union (EU).
The project targets the Mjini informal settlement in Bungoma town and Landi Matope settlement in Chwele town, home to over 11,000 residents.
Governor Kenneth Lusaka, during a site visit in Chwele, praised the initiative for its potential to enhance livelihoods and foster economic growth.
“These efforts will transform lives and end cycles of poverty,” he said.
The ongoing infrastructure works include road upgrades, drainage systems, improved water supply, and the installation of streetlights to enhance both security and living conditions.
In Landi Matope, a 2.25-kilometer road and 22 streetlights are being constructed, while Mjini will see a 1.588-kilometer road and nine streetlights.
The completion of these projects is slated for mid-2025, with the aim of improving access to essential services and creating a better living environment for the residents.
In addition to the informal settlement upgrades, Lusaka also announced a Sh345 million contract for the construction of a modern market in Chwele.
The market is expected to boost local trade and strengthen the county’s economy.
These projects are part of a broader initiative by KISIP2 to improve infrastructure in informal settlements across the country, with the goal of reducing poverty and promoting sustainable development.
Ends.
