Busia Senator Andrew Okiya Omutata Okoiti has taken a significant step toward a potential presidential campaign by appointing a 10-member committee to assess his viability as a candidate in the 2027 general election.
Among the appointees is journalist and activist Hanifa Adan, who will serve as the committee’s public relations and media consultant.
Adan, known for her leadership during the mid-2024 Gen Z protests, was instrumental in mobilizing resources for victims of police brutality.
Her role in Omtata’s team underscores a strategic focus on youth engagement and grassroots mobilization.
“If I’m the best driver for the vehicle of change, so be it,” Omutata said, emphasizing that his decision to run would depend on public demand and the committee’s findings.
Meanwhile, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has reaffirmed plans to contest all elective positions in 2027, including the presidency.
Party chair Gladys Wanga said ODM is focused on rebuilding and strengthening its base.
The party is undergoing a leadership transition, with Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o serving as interim leader while Raila Odinga pursues a bid for African Union Commission chair.
President William Ruto, who won in 2022 with 50.49% of the vote, is expected to seek re-election.
However, growing public discontent over taxation policies and the high cost of living could create openings for challengers like Omutata or ODM’s eventual nominee.
Observers predict a crowded field in 2027, with fragmented opposition likely to shape the electoral landscape.
Youth voters, who make up over 70% of registered voters, are poised to play a decisive role in the outcome.
