Bungoma Senator, CBS David Wafula Wakoli has praised the Joseph Waswa Foundation for its swift response during the rescue operation following the deadly road accident at Malaha Junction along the Webuye–Kitale Highway that left at least 14 people dead and several others injured.

The senator made the remarks during a fundraiser organized by local leaders to support victims and families affected by the tragedy near Webuye in Bungoma County.

Authorities said the accident began when two motorcycles traveling in opposite directions collided head-on late at night, killing both riders instantly.

As members of the public gathered at the scene to help the victims, a long-distance trailer traveling toward Webuye reportedly lost control and rammed into the crowd.

The truck plowed through pedestrians and roadside vehicles, leaving multiple people dead on the spot and dozens injured in what residents described as one of the worst road tragedies in the area in recent years.

Hospital officials later confirmed that at least 14 people died from the crash while several others were admitted to nearby health facilities with serious injuries.

While addressing residents, Wakoli commended Webuye West parliamentary aspirant Joseph Lendrix Waswa for mobilizing resources through the Joseph Waswa Foundation to assist in the rescue effort.

According to the senator, ambulances from the foundation were among the first emergency responders to arrive at the scene, helping transport injured victims to hospitals and offering critical support during the chaotic rescue mission.

Wakoli said such acts of service demonstrate leadership grounded in compassion and commitment to the welfare of the community.

The Malaha Junction tragedy has once again drawn attention to the growing road safety crisis in Kenya.

Government statistics show that thousands of people lose their lives on Kenyan roads every year, with speeding, reckless driving and poorly maintained vehicles among the leading causes of fatal accidents.

Police say investigations into the Malaha crash are ongoing as authorities seek to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
