BUNGOMA, Kenya

Grief and shock swept across Bungoma County on Monday night after a horrific road accident at Malaha Junction along the Webuye–Lugulu road left more than 18 people dead, according to early reports shared by leaders and witnesses.

Bungoma Woman Representative Catherine Wambilianga confirmed the tragedy in a condolence message posted on social media shortly after the crash.

“I am deeply saddened to receive the heartbreaking news of a horrific accident that has occurred at Malaha Junction, along the Webuye-Lugulu road. This devastating incident has claimed the lives of more than 18 promising individuals,” she said.

The lawmaker extended condolences to families and friends of the victims, describing the incident as a painful loss to the community.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones affected by this terrible loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this incredibly difficult time,” she added.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene shortly after the crash, with twisted metal, injured passengers and frantic rescue efforts by residents and motorists.

Crowds gathered at the darkened junction as people attempted to pull survivors from the wreckage.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the accident involved a passenger vehicle traveling along the busy Webuye–Lugulu route, a road frequently used by public service vehicles and cargo trucks connecting western Kenya to the northern corridor.

Several survivors were reportedly rushed to nearby hospitals in Webuye and Bungoma, while police officers and rescue teams moved bodies from the wreckage as investigations into the cause of the crash began.

The Malaha Junction area has long been considered dangerous by motorists due to heavy traffic, speeding vehicles and limited visibility at night.

As news of the tragedy spread across social media, Kenyans expressed grief and anger, with many calling for stricter road safety enforcement and improved infrastructure on the busy route.

Authorities are expected to release official details on the victims and the circumstances surrounding the crash once rescue and identification efforts are completed.
