Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja received a political boost on Wednesday after a majority of Azimio-aligned Members of the County Assembly rejected a fresh attempt to impeach him, citing the spirit of cooperation fostered by President William Ruto and the late opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Addressing reporters at City Hall, Majority Leader Peter Imwatok said more than 70 MCAs had distanced themselves from a parallel push to remove Sakaja from office, arguing that renewed impeachment efforts would undermine stability and derail development in the capital.

The lawmakers said their position was informed by the political détente between Ruto and the late Odinga, which has eased tensions between rival factions and encouraged cooperation in Nairobi’s governance.

We stand for unity, stability and service delivery to the people of Nairobi,” Imwatok said, adding that the assembly should focus on oversight and implementation of key development programs rather than political battles.

The move comes amid a recently approved cooperation framework between Nairobi County and the national government, projected to channel billions of shillings into infrastructure, housing and service delivery projects in the capital.

MCAs backing Sakaja said disrupting county leadership at this stage could stall the rollout of those initiatives.

A rival faction led by Deputy Minority Leader Waithera Chege and Baba Dogo MCA Godfrey Majiwa had earlier signaled plans to table a new impeachment motion, claiming to have gathered the required signatures.

However, the motion had not been formally introduced on the assembly floor as of Wednesday.

Impeachment threats against Sakaja surfaced previously but were halted following high-level political consultations between Ruto and Odinga, whose truce reshaped alliances within Nairobi’s County Assembly.

Wednesday’s development strengthens Sakaja’s position at City Hall, signaling that he retains crucial backing within the assembly despite lingering political divisions.
