At least 63 people were killed and several others injured early Wednesday in a massive road crash involving four vehicles along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, Ugandan police said.
The accident occurred around 12:15 a.m. at Kitalega Village near Asili Farm, when two buses and two other vehicles collided in what police described as a chain-reaction crash triggered by dangerous overtaking.
According to initial investigations, the driver of an Isuzu bus (UBF 614X) traveling from Kampala toward Gulu attempted to overtake a Tata lorry (UBK 647C).
At the same moment, another Isuzu bus (UAM 045V) coming from the opposite direction also tried to overtake a Toyota Surf (CGO 5132AB 07).
Both buses collided head-on, leading to a devastating chain of crashes that caused multiple vehicles to overturn several times.
“As a result, 63 people lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries,” police spokesperson SP Kananura Michael said in a statement.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported survivors to Kiryandongo Hospital and nearby medical facilities.
Bodies of the deceased were taken to the same hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem examination and identification.
Authorities have launched a full investigation and urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads.
“We strongly urge all motorists to avoid dangerous and careless overtaking, which remains one of the leading causes of crashes in the country,” Kananura said.
Police extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished a quick recovery to the injured.
