Double Olympic and world champion Faith Kipyegon is set to chase history Thursday night as she attempts to become the first woman to run a mile in under four minutes.
The race, scheduled for 9:00 p.m. local time, marks yet another chapter in Kipyegon’s storied career and could cement her place among the greatest middle-distance runners of all time.
Already the world record holder in both the 1500 meters (3:50.07) and the mile (4:07.64), Kipyegon is aiming to break one of track and field’s most iconic barriers.
The feat has been accomplished by men since Roger Bannister’s landmark run in 1954, but no woman has yet dipped under the four-minute mark.
For Kipyegon, 30, the attempt is about more than just a stopwatch.
“Watching Kipchoge run sub-2 in the marathon was a moment that changed how we see limits,” she said in a recent interview, referring to fellow Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge’s historic 1:59:40 run in 2019.
“It made me believe that nothing is impossible with discipline, consistency, and belief.”
Trained in the high-altitude town of Kaptagat, Kipyegon has prepared meticulously for this moment.
The same camp that fueled Kipchoge’s marathon exploits now powers her push for middle-distance greatness.
Her run tonight is expected to draw global attention, with Kenyan fans at home and abroad rallying behind her. Social media has been abuzz all week, and anticipation in the athletics world is high.
Kipyegon enters the race as a national icon and global role model. Her dominance on the track and humility off it have earned her admiration far beyond the sport.
Whether she breaks the barrier or not, her attempt symbolizes a broader pursuit of possibility.
“I run with faith,” she once said. Tonight, she runs for history.
Ends.
Ends.
