Wetang’ula Leads Bipartisan Call for Unity and Purpose-Driven Leadership in Busia.

BUSIA, Kenya — National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called for a new era of purpose-driven leadership, urging politicians to shelve divisive politics and unite behind development initiatives that uplift citizens.

Speaking during a school infrastructure support initiative at St. Francis Sikinga Secondary School in Nambale Constituency, Busia County, Wetang’ula emphasized that transformational leadership requires unity, not discord.

“Purpose-driven leadership is key to the success of any country or institution,” Wetang’ula said.

“As elected leaders keen on transforming the country, we came together to support Hon. Geoffrey Mulanya and his work in improving school infrastructure. This is how change begins—by investing in education and our youth.”

The event brought together leaders from across the political divide, who echoed a shared call to set aside partisan politics in favor of development and national cohesion. Wetang’ula issued a stern warning against political actors fanning unrest.

“We are putting politicians propagating divisive politics on notice,” he said. “Individuals inciting and promoting war in the country should be rejected and vehemently opposed.”

The leaders also addressed growing public concerns over police conduct. National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot condemned the abuse of police power, while cautioning against generalizing the entire police force.

“There are rotten apples in every institution,” Ichung’wah said.

“But that doesn’t mean we criminalize the whole police service. We must hold individuals accountable while preserving the dignity of the institution.”

Senator Cheruiyot supported the call for reforms, stating that accountability and integrity must guide all levels of authority.

Wetang’ula led a high-powered delegation to the event, including Busia Governor Paul Otuoma, Farouk Kibet, Majority Whip Silvanus Osoro (South Mugirango), and MPs from across the political spectrum.

Among them were Nabii Nabwera (Lugari), Innocent Mugabe (Likuyani), John Bwire (Taveta), Didmus Barasa (Kimilili), Beatrice Elachi (Dagoretti North), Joseph Oyula (Butula), Vincent Musyoka (Mwala), Mary Emase (Teso South), Raphael Wanjala (Budalangi), David Ochieng’ (Ugenya), Rachel Nyamai (Kitui South), John Makali (Kanduyi), Martin Pepela (Webuye East), and host MP Geoffrey Mulanya.

The leaders pledged continued support for education initiatives, asserting that quality infrastructure was a non-negotiable pillar in improving student outcomes and long-term national development.

“This was not a political gathering,” Wetang’ula concluded.

“It was a clear message that Kenya is bigger than all of us—and the only way forward is unity, purpose, and service to the people.”
