Kenyaβs MPs Menβs Basketball team delivered a commanding 67-38 win over Tanzania in the second match of the ongoing East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Games on Wednesday at Makupa Sports Club, Mombasa.
The game underscored Kenyaβs prowess, with Bungoma Senator David Wafula Wakoli leading the charge with an outstanding 20-point performance.
This victory comes after Kenya was awarded a walkover on Tuesday when South Sudan failed to appear for their scheduled match.
Senator Wakoli, a passionate advocate for basketball development in Bungoma County, played a pivotal role in the team’s success.
After the game, he praised his teammates’ synergy and dedication, attributing their success to rigorous preparation and a solid game plan.
βWe are well-prepared as a team, and with strong teamwork and the guidance of our coach, we will bag the gold,β Wakoli asserted.
He also encouraged Kenyan youth to take basketball seriously, emphasizing the opportunities the sport can offer, including scholarships and professional growth.
Wakoli further invited fans to an upcoming basketball tournament in Bungoma on December 21-22 at Bungoma High School, promising an action-packed event aimed at promoting the sport.
Kenyan player Hon. Japheth Nyakundi echoed Wakoliβs sentiments, expressing confidence ahead of their upcoming clash with Uganda.
βLast year in Kigali, we finished second, but this time, weβre aiming for the top spot. Uganda should brace for a tough battle,β Nyakundi declared.
Hon. Eli Letepila emphasized sportsmanship and community unity, adding humorously, βFear hot porridge, fear electricity, and fear the Kenyan team.β
The Kenyan team’s coach, Zadock Nechenje, expressed unwavering confidence.
βKenya is the team to beat. Weβre taking gold home. Our strategies will speak for themselves in the upcoming matches,β he said.
Tanzaniaβs team, captained by Priscus Tarimo, acknowledged Kenya’s dominance.
βKenya was well-prepared, and they gave us a tough challenge,β Tarimo admitted, though he remained hopeful for future matches.
Their coach, Hallelujah Havalambi, cited Kenyaβs efficiency in transitions and rebounding as key factors in the loss.
The match was attended by Stephen Apopo, a director at the Kenyan Speakerβs Office, who highlighted the importance of the EALA Games in fostering regional unity.
With the 14th edition of the EALA Games sponsored by Mchezo, Kenya now looks poised for a championship run, while Tanzania aims to regroup and fight back in the coming matches.
