BUNGOMA, Kenya (Nov. 22).

Bungoma County Governor Kenneth Lusaka on Friday called on university graduates to embrace creativity, resilience, and innovation as essential tools to navigate the competitive job market.

Speaking during the 9th graduation ceremony at Kibabii University, Lusaka encouraged the 1,529 graduates to pioneer solutions to modern challenges while contributing to socioeconomic transformation.

“The world is full of opportunities, but it demands innovation, creativity, and determination to unlock them,” Lusaka said.

Kibabii University, located in Bungoma County, was founded in 2011 as a constituent college of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology and attained full university status in 2015.

Over the years, it has emerged as a center for academic excellence, offering programs in science, technology, education, and business.

The university has established itself as a leader in producing graduates who excel in both professional and entrepreneurial endeavors.

The institution has recognized trailblazers who embody its commitment to leadership and innovation.

In 2023, Kibabii University conferred honorary Doctor of Philosophy degrees on:

Dr. Moses Wetang’ula, Speaker of the National Assembly, for his contributions to Kenya’s legislative and political landscape.

A native of Bungoma County, Wetang’ula has long been an advocate for education and community development.

Dr. Paul Russo Oigara was also conferred with a PHD.

Oigara who is the CEO of Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), is well known for his transformative leadership in the banking and finance sectors, where he has driven growth, inclusion, and digital innovation.

These honorees represent the university’s vision of nurturing global leaders who inspire positive change.

Kibabii University has become a pillar of economic growth in Bungoma County.

The institution employs hundreds of staff, provides a steady customer base for local businesses, and spurs infrastructure development.

Surrounding communities have benefited from increased demand for housing, transport, and retail services, creating economic opportunities for thousands.

Lusaka highlighted ongoing infrastructure improvements around the university, including roads, street lighting, and water supply systems, which aim to support both the institution and the wider community.

A partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has notably enhanced water access for the university and neighboring areas, improving livelihoods.

Additionally, the university’s research and innovation initiatives address regional challenges, including agricultural productivity and entrepreneurial growth.

Kibabii’s graduates are at the forefront of these efforts, launching startups and contributing to economic diversification.

Governor Lusaka announced plans to allocate additional land in Kopsiro and Sang’alo for the university’s expansion, enabling it to accommodate more students and enhance its academic offerings.

“As a county, we are committed to supporting Kibabii University’s mission and ensuring its growth continues to benefit the community,” Lusaka said.

He also reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to creating a conducive learning environment through partnerships, scholarships, and infrastructure investment.

The ceremony, themed “Catalyzing Transformative Education, Research, Technology, and Innovation for an Entrepreneurial and Sustainable World,” underscored Kibabii University’s role in addressing global challenges.

Vice-Chancellor Isaac Ipara Odeo commended Lusaka’s support for education and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to nurturing leaders equipped to transform society.

“As we celebrate today’s graduates, we remain focused on producing individuals who are ready to innovate, inspire, and solve problems,” Ipara said.

With its expanding programs and influence, Kibabii University continues to solidify its status as a cornerstone of academic excellence and a driver of economic development in Bungoma County and beyond.
