Mt. Kenya East MPs Endorse Kindiki as Their Leader

By Swaleh
“We acknowledge the need for a strong linkage with the Executive to fast-track our region’s priorities.”

In Summary

The endorsement occurred during a parliamentary group meeting at the Izaak Walton Hotel in Embu.
The discussion focused on the socio-economic development and political strategy for the region.
Elected leaders from Mt. Kenya East, representing Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Meru counties, gathered at the Izaak Walton Hotel in Embu on September 9, 2024.

In a significant development, the leaders have endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their official liaison with the Executive.

During a press conference on Monday, the leaders unanimously confirmed Kindiki as the key link between their bloc and the national government. Mbeere MP Geoffrey Ruku conveyed the message on behalf of the group.

“As the legislators of Mt. Kenya East, and on behalf of our people, we have unanimously agreed that Prof. Kithure Kindiki is the link between us and the Executive,” Ruku stated.

The decision was made during a parliamentary group meeting aimed at discussing the future direction for socio-economic and political development in the region.

“We recognize the necessity of a robust connection with the Executive to expedite our region’s priorities. Through consistent collaboration and dialogue, we are confident that Mt. Kenya East will gain stronger recognition on the national stage,” the leaders affirmed.

They expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for appointing three Cabinet Secretaries from the region—Justin Muturi (Public Service), Prof. Kithure Kindiki (Interior), and Eng. Eric Mugaa (Water and Sanitation). They view these appointments as a reflection of the President’s trust and recognition of Mt. Kenya East.

The MPs also called on the President to prioritize job creation in the region moving forward.

Present at the meeting were MPs Mpuru Abuuri (Tigania East), Elizabeth Karamu (Woman Rep Meru), Geoffrey Ruku (Mbeere North), John Mutunga (Tigania West), John Paul Mwirigi (Igembe South), Senator Alexander Mudigi (Embu), Dan Kiili (Igembe Central), Gitonga Murugara (Tharaka), Pamela Njoki (Embu Woman Rep), Kareke Mbiuki (Maara), and Mugambi (Buuri). Some leaders sent their apologies.

This endorsement comes amid ongoing debates over leadership within the broader Mt. Kenya region. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is among those vying for influence, though his efforts have faced opposition from several regional leaders.
