“ODM Pushes Back Against Rumors of 2027 Pact with Ruto”

ODM Refutes Claims of 2027 Coalition Deal with Ruto

by The Misfit on Thursday, 29 August 2024

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has firmly denied recent reports suggesting a coalition deal with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party for the 2027 elections.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Raila Odinga-led party emphasized its strong foundation and dismissed the rumors as mere “word on the street.”

“ODM is built on a solid foundation with pillars felt across the country. Therefore, any rumors should remain just that—rumors,” the statement read.

The denial came in response to an article alleging that Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chair and President William Ruto’s endorsement of his candidacy signaled a merger between ODM and UDA in preparation for the upcoming election.

Odinga, who has been a prominent opposition leader in Kenyan politics, is now focusing on the AUC chair position, making him a strong contender for the role.

At the same time, President Ruto has commenced a four-day development tour in Nyanza, Odinga’s political stronghold.

Despite the shifting political landscape, ODM members insist that the party remains independent of the government. Kisii Governor Simba Arati recently reiterated that ODM has not entered into any pact with UDA but is open to collaborating with the government.

“I want to clarify that ODM has not agreed to any coalition with UDA,” Arati stated in Kakamega County on Saturday, August 24. “What we have done is provide our members to assist the president in advancing his agenda. Those from ODM who have joined the government should take their work seriously. I urge them to demonstrate that ODM is a valuable party.”

During a visit to Nyamira County on August 12, President Ruto also affirmed that UDA has not formed a coalition with ODM.

“We have not entered into any coalition agreement. We have only agreed to work together in ways that benefit all Kenyans,” he said, while also expressing gratitude to ODM leaders who have supported the current administration.

Meanwhile, Raila Odinga has garnered support from 19 Heads of State in his bid for the AUC chair, bolstering his position on the continental stage.
