Kibra MP Peter Orero has voiced strong concerns regarding the new university funding model, emphasizing the need for a more student-centered approach to education financing.
Orero highlighted that the financial bands used to allocate funding do not accurately reflect the realities faced by many students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Speaking at a fundraiser for the Olympic Primary School stadium, he criticized the model’s parameters, asserting they place undue burden on students from low-income families due to high tuition fees.
“This funding model has been discussed extensively, and many of us, including the Education Committee, are dissatisfied with how students are categorized into financial bands,” Orero stated. He called for a thorough review of the model to ensure it is equitable and accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic status.
The MP plans to meet with Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba to provide input on improving the model. Orero stressed the importance of prioritizing students’ needs over the financial demands of universities, advocating for a system that facilitates education for all, especially those in financial distress.
“The idea is good, but the way the parameters are weighted causes issues. We need extensive research to ensure that all students can benefit from this funding model,” he concluded, underscoring the urgency of reforming the approach to education financing in Kenya.
