President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda has approved a wide-ranging list of development and cultural projects for the Bugisu sub-region following a high-level meeting with the Umukuka, Jude Mike Mudoma last year.
The approvals, described by regional leaders as comprehensive, cover critical sectors including healthcare, infrastructure, sports and cultural preservation, marking a significant step toward addressing long-standing development needs in eastern Uganda.
Among the flagship projects is the construction of the Umukuka III Hospital on Bumageni Army land.
The President also sanctioned the upgrade of several Health Centre IVs—Busiu, Bugobero, Muyembe, Magale and Budadiri—into full district hospitals to improve access to specialized medical services.
In a move aimed at boosting youth development and regional visibility, Museveni approved plans for a Bugisu Regional Stadium, expected to host national sporting events and nurture local talent.
On infrastructure, the President reaffirmed government commitment to key road projects, including the Mbale–Lwakhakha, Mbale–Kapchorwa–Suam, Nalugugu–Mutufu and Bubulo–Bududa roads, which are expected to enhance connectivity and trade within the region.
The meeting also yielded major cultural and governance gains.
Museveni approved the establishment of a Cultural Liaison Office and the appointment of a Presidential Advisor on Bugisu Affairs, strengthening coordination between the government and the Bamasaaba cultural institution.
Additionally, the President directed that efforts be made to preserve historical heritage linked to the Luwero Triangle, underscoring the importance of cultural identity in national development.
Leaders from Bugisu who include the Bugisu Cultural Institution spokesman Stephen Masiga have welcomed the approvals, terming them a turning point for the region, with attention now shifting to implementation and delivery of the promised projects.
